A DOOR FROM OTHERWISE · VOLUME II

When does inheritance become a monopoly?

The alternative to inherited authority is not amnesia. Continuity can carry survival without acquiring permanent jurisdiction over descendants.

Jisma asked whether all inheritance should therefore be loosened. Nura answered before anyone else. “No.” She pointed at the kitchen. Recipes. language. care habits. who visits the sick. how money is shared. who remembers birthdays. who takes in a cousin after trouble. Inheritance carried survival too. A family with no continuity would have to invent trust from zero every morning. The problem was not inheritance. The problem was monopoly.

Try asking two questions separately: what would be lost if this inheritance vanished, and what future becomes impossible if it is never allowed to surrender authority?
